Financial Times reports that recent research from Standard and Poor's shows that only 28% of actively managed large cap funds outperformed the S&P 500 over the five-year market cycle from 2004 - 2008. Results for small-cap and mid-cap funds were worse. Awareness of the difficulty of outperforming markets is helping ETFs gain popularity. There is really no reason to pay high fees with the availability of ETFs.
